The Tharavad

Laterite walls, teak pillars and a courtyard open to the sky: the house at Kuttichira, built 1911–1915.

Like the old Mappila houses around the Kuttichira pond, our tharavad was built for a large, matrilineal household: daughters stayed, husbands came to live with them, and every room opened onto the shared courtyard.

Inside the house

Padippura

The tiled gatehouse where guests were greeted and shoes left behind.

Nadumuttam

The open courtyard at the heart of the house, where rain falls in and families gather.

Pathayam

The carved teak granary that once held rice for a year and the family ledgers.

Kulam

The stepped pond by the mosque where generations learned to swim.
